Description
This course provides a practical introduction to turbulence modeling using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach in OpenFOAM. Participants will learn the fundamentals of turbulence, the principles behind RANS modeling, and how to implement common turbulence models such as k–epsilon, k–omega, and Spalart–Allmaras for accurate and efficient simulation of turbulent flows. Learners will compare results by simulating the backward-facing step problem. The course combines video lectures, guided exercises, and case study files to enable participants to explore solver performance and stability through practical examples.
What You Will Learn
- Understand the concept of turbulence and its impact on fluid flow.
- Learn the derivation and formulation of the RANS equations.
- Explore turbulence closure strategies including k–epsilon, k–omega, and Spalart–Allmaras models.
- Apply wall functions and the Boussinesq hypothesis in practical simulations.
- Gain hands-on experience implementing RANS models in OpenFOAM.
- Learn model selection techniques based on flow type and simulation requirements.
Intended Learners
- Engineering students and researchers studying fluid mechanics or CFD.
- Practicing engineers involved in aerodynamic, hydrodynamic, or industrial flow simulations.
- Professionals seeking to enhance their skills in turbulence modeling using open-source CFD tools.
- Beginners to intermediate OpenFOAM users aiming to expand their understanding of RANS-based turbulence modeling.
Must-Haves
- Should be capable of independently executing OpenFOAM simulations on a local system.
